Calathea Lancifolia
Common Name: Prayer Plant
Calathea Lancifolia
Also known as pinstripe has very dark almost black foliage that is lined with symmetric pink stripes. Most people when seeing this plant for the first time ask whether it is real. Ornata is one of the most ornamental house plants of the popular Calathea genus. The sky reaching growth combined with the silvery foliage brings both volume and aesthetics to any room.
Calathea sanderiana thrives indoors with the correct care. Ensure your environment has high humidity with no direct sun light. Most importantly the plant should be watered with soft water only, free from calcium carbonate and other minerals found in many urban water sources. Grouping Calatheas will help achieve the correct humidity along with an attentive watering routine.
SIZE: Height 35 cm, approximately
LIGHT: As with most variegated plants, Calathea need plenty of diffused light however direct sunlight will cause the leaves to fade and lose their markings. They can tolerate some degree of shade, but the better the light conditions, the more you will be rewarded by fine foliage. Experiment in your home to find the perfect spot for your plant.
WATERING: Calathea must be kept in damp soil at all times, but definitely do not allow the plant to sit in water or in very wet soil. Think little and often as a watering policy.
SOIL: Well draining potting mix. A good mix is two parts peat/coir and one part perlite.
HUMIDITY: High humidity levels are a must. Stand on a wet pebble tray to improve humidity and mist frequently. Pop it in the shower room or kitchen from time to time to give an extra boost.
FERTILISER: Once a month, balance NPK: 20-20-20 or lower equivalent balance NPK ratio.
