Araceae Schismatoglottis
Schismatoglottis is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. Members of the genus are similar in appearance and growth habit to those of the genus Homalomena, but the two genera are not closely related. The primary difference is that the leaves of Schismatoglottis are not aromatic. Schismatoglottis will thrive in bright, indirect light. However, it is also tolerant to lower light conditions. This plant prefers warm temperatures. They do not like being exposed to cold air as it will damage its foliage.
Water:
Water your Schismatoglottis once the top 2 inches of the soil has dried out. Make sure the plant is not sitting in water and it can cause the root the rot. Schismatoglottis can thrive in normal household humidity. If the air is dry, the plant can benefit from increased humidity through misting or using a pebble tray and humidifier.
Soil and Repotting:
Use a standard well-draining houseplant potting mix. Repot your Schismatoglottis when the plant outgrows its pot. It grows relatively quickly and seem to prefer space to grow outward. You will probably need to repot to freshen the soil and encourage healthy new growth once a year.
Propagation
Use a balanced fertiliser. Follow directions on the label of plant food.
Toxicity
Schismatoglottis are non-toxic and is therefore safe around kids and/or pets.
Possible Issues
Under the right care and conditions, your plant will grow happy and healthy. But here are some issues you may encounter while caring for a Schismatoglottis:
Mealy bugs and scales – When spotted, remove it from the plant and treat immediately with neem oil.
Droopy leaves – This is caused by underwatering. Soak your plant in a tray of water for 10 minutes. Make sure not to leave it in water as it can cause root rot.
Yellowing leaves – You are probably overwatering your Schismatoglottis. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings.
